June 2012 Dell EqualLogic Configuration Guide v13.2 70
4.7.3 M-Series Pass-Through Modules
Pass-Through modules are supported for use with EqualLogic SAN solutions. The Pass-Through
module provides a simple, direct path from each blade server’s optional Ethernet mezzanine card to
an externally accessible port. These ports can then be connected to one or more external switches
that are hosting PS-Series arrays.
Table 35 M-Series IO Module Pass-Through to External Switch Infrastructure
M-Series IO Module Pass-Through to External Switch Infrastructure
Advantages Concerns
Fewer switch hops
Fewer switches to manage
SAN can support M1000e enclosures and rack or tower
stand-alone servers
SAN traffic isolated outside of M1000e enclosure
Less expensive that multi-tiered switch solution
Supports non-dell branded switching as a single vendor
solution
No firmware to update on the pass-through modules.
Complex cabling in a
rack environment.
Other Notes
Additional M1000e enclosures are added in similar fashion to diagram above
Supported with stacked or non-stacked external SAN infrastructures
This strategy works for a single fabric or dual fabric M-Series IO module configuration (See
Section 4.7.1.1 for details)
