Enabling WOL under Microsoft Windows

NICsandLOMsfromDellhaveWOLdisabledbydefault.Havingmorethan
onedeviceenabledforWOLinasystemcanoverloadthe3.3‐voltauxiliary
powersupplyandcauseittomalfunction.Dellstronglyrecommendsthatonly
onedevicebeenabledforWOLpersystem.ToenableWOLfollow
thesteps
below.
ThestepstoenablingWOLunderWindows2000ServerandWindowsServer
2003operatingsystemsareasfollows:
1. Windows2000andWindows2003donotrequirethatWOLbeturnedonin
theNIC’sorLOM’sfirmware,thereforethestepsusingDOSoutlinedinthe
Out‐
of‐BoxandWindowsNT4.0proceduresarenotnecessaryandshould
beskipped.EnablingWOLwithIBAUTIL.EXE,UXDIAG.EXEor
B57UDIAG.EXEmaybedetrimentaltoWOLunderWindows2000and
Windows2003.
2. LogintoWindows2000/2003withanaccountthathasadministrator
privileges.IfthemostrecentDellprovided
driversfortheNICarenot
installed,installthem.OpenthepropertiesfortheNICenabledforWOL
andthenclickthe‘Configure’button.ChoosethePowerManagementTab
andenablethecheckboxnexttotheline‘Allowthisdevicetobringthe
computeroutofstandby.’Standbyinthis
casereferstobothStandbyand
Hibernate.Ensurethatthecheckboxnexttotheline‘Allowthecomputerto
turnoffthisdevicetosavepower’isalsochecked.
3. EnsureHibernateisenabledforthesystembyopeningPowerOptionsinthe
ControlPanel,choosingtheHibernateTab
andchecking‘Enablehibernate
support’.(SeeNotebelowifusingaPowerEdge350.)
4. ClickOK.
5. IftheNICisnotalreadyconnectedtoaswitchorhub,connectitandsetthe
systemtohibernatebyclickingStart/ShutdownandchoosingHibernate.
