Enabling WOL under Red Hat Enterprise

NICsandLOMsfromDellhaveWOLdisabledbydefault.Havingmorethan
onedeviceenabledforWOLinasystemcanoverloadthe3.3‐voltauxiliary
powersupplyandcauseittomalfunction.Dellstronglyrecommendsthatonly
onedevicebeenabledforWOLpersystem.ToenableWOL,
createaDOS‐
bootablefloppyandcopytheutility,listedintheToolssectionabove,specificto
theWOLdevicetoitfromtheDellOpenManagementServerAssistantor
downloaditfromhttp://support.dell.com
.
ThestepstoEnablingWOLunderRedHatEnterpriseLinuxversions4andlater
andSUSELinuxEnterpriseServerversions9andlaterareasfollows:
1. LogintotheBASHshellwithrootprivileges.IfthemostrecentDell
provideddriversarenotinstalled,installthem.Run‘ethtoolethX’
where
‘ethX’isthenameandinstanceofthedesiredWOLnetworkinterface.The
WOLcapabilitiesandcurrentdefaultsettingswillbedisplayedinthe
output.
a. Theethtoolmanpageshavemoreinformationonsettingsand
meaningsofthesettings.
b. IfthedefaultsettingsshowWOLdisabled(as
theywillbydefaultas
shippedfromDell)thenfollowingsteps1and2intheOut‐of‐Box
WOLinstructionsectionwillchangethedefaultsetting.
c. EnablingWOLwithethtoolwhenthedefaultisdisabledwillnot
persistacrossreboots,meaningthatshuttingdownandperforming
WOLonce,then
shuttingdownagainandattemptingWOLwillnot
besuccessfulwithoutrunningethtoolagaintoenableWOL.Theuse
ofastartupscriptcanenableWOLoneachsubsequentrebootif
desired,orchangingthedefaultfromtheDOSbasedutilities.
2. Run‘ethtoolethX–swolg’toenable
MagicPacketWOL,whereethXisthe
nameandinstanceofthedesiredWOLnetworkinterface.
3. HaltLinuxandshutthesystemoff.TheconnectionLEDontheNICand
switchorhubwillremainon,indicatingtheNICismonitoringthenetwork
forwakeuppacketsdirectedtoits
MACaddress.
